What it is for

An umbrella or excess policy adds limits above the underlying general liability, auto and employer's liability. Commercial general contractors, property managers, municipalities and large shippers routinely require more than a standard primary policy carries, and buying the difference as an umbrella is usually cheaper than raising every primary limit.
