About Coverage by Trade
Coverage by Trade maps the insurance a small business needs by trade — general liability, workers' comp, commercial auto, bonds and the rest — against the injury data BLS publishes for that trade and the few coverages federal law fixes.
How the site works
The injury figures come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics — the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses and the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries — at the most detailed NAICS industry level (four to six digits) where BLS publishes it. The one federal insurance minimum, for motor carriers, is quoted from 49 CFR 387.9. The coverage checklists are the site's own, written without premiums or limits, because those are set by state filings and by the contract in front of you. The methodology page lists every file, computation and exclusion.
Who it is for
Owners of small contracting, service, transport, food and care businesses working out what a broker or a client is asking for and why; and anyone trying to understand why one trade's premium starts so much higher than another's. It sells nothing and quotes nothing.
Corrections
If a figure is wrong or a source has changed, email hello@coveragebytrade.com with the page and a link. Corrections go into the data file and the check date updates with the next build.
