What it is for

Cyber liability covers breach response, ransomware, and liability for client or patient data. For most trades here it is optional; for care providers holding health records and for contractors on institutional projects it is increasingly a contract requirement.

How it is bought

Cyber policies combine first-party costs (forensics, notification, credit monitoring, ransomware response, business interruption) with third-party liability for the data of clients or patients. For the trades on this site the premium is small and the application is short, but it asks about multi-factor authentication, backups and email security, and a weak answer can mean a declined application or an exclusion for the very event you wanted covered. Care providers holding health records have a regulatory exposure as well as a contractual one; contractors on institutional projects are increasingly asked for a cyber certificate alongside the usual lines.
